More About this Coffee

For their fourth year with Mohamed Ali Estate, The Barn offers an exclusive relationship that started when Ethiopian laws changed to allow smaller farms to export directly. Located in Jimma at high elevation, this coffee grows in the shades of pristine forest.

Mohamed Ali has a fantastic season with very expressive flavours. Mohamed Ali has has rich flavours of ripe strawberries, chocolate and peach blossom. Roasted for espresso we pull juicy shots with a creamy mouthfeel. What we love about Ethiopian naturals, is their fruity flavor intensity without having too much of acidity.

About the Producer:

The Producer Mustafa Mohamed Ali is the son of Mohamed Ali who went to Egypt for education. On his way back from Egypt, Mohamed Ali stopped over in Jimma and it was there where he was asked to open a Koran school. The building still exists on the Boto site. Mustafa runs the farm with the help of his brother, but he was waiting for a partner to be able to expand and improve. The Barn's export partner Belco was able to offer him financing and loans so he has working capital, and with our exclusive relationship he can calculate how much he will earn over the season and plan accordingly. Because of this support he has been able to begin massive upgrades on the farm to improve quality even more in coming seasons.

About the Farm:

When entering the estate you walk into pristine forest. The nature is untouched and coffee grows wild. Bees and fruit trees are offering a great mix of crop and additional income when coffee is off season. At 2050 meter elevation we are way up in Ethiopias highlands with great temperature changes between day and night creating beautiful flavour profiles.

Ever since we committed to Mohamed Ali, the farm has seen very good development. P1 quality grades went up from 20% to over 60% simply by having certainty on the buyer and fair pricing. Mohamed Ali invests in labour, selective picking, more drying beds and honey coffee production. The farm was also certified organic.
