The 3-cup Alessi Moka pot, in collaboration with David Chipperfield, is a highly original take on the traditional Italian stove top coffee maker. The moka pot is made of aluminium, and de facto cannot be used on induction hobs, unless you use it with a compatibility pad. The handle is made from polyamide, making it hard-wearing and soft to the touch. It is designed for one person, with a capacity of 15 cl, which corresponds to three cups of coffee.
To make sure your coffee is perfect, remember to use the right grind. Italian coffee makers require a coarser grind than filter coffee makers, so that there's no unsightly residue at the bottom of your cup to spoil your enjoyment. Sir David Chipperfield is a British designer born in London, who in 1984 founded David Chipperfield Architects, a practice that has won numerous national and international competitions. An honorary member of the Florentine Academy of Art and Design since 2004, he was appointed Royal Designer for Industry in 2006 and awarded the Order of Merit by the Federal Republic of Germany in 2009. He was also awarded the RIBA Gold Medal for Architecture in 2011.
What could be more natural than for the Alessi brand to team up with such a design icon to create an Italian coffee maker available in three sizes (1, 3 or 6 cups). Sir Chipperfield created an eleven-sided volume, giving the coffee maker a familiar yet innovative shape. Functionality is at the heart of this model, thanks in particular to the lid on which the cups can be placed to heat them - a trick that enhances the aroma and flavour of the drink - and to the position of the knob, which allows the lid to be deftly lifted with just one hand.
Alessi, founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi, has long been at the forefront of innovative and inspired product design and boasts a wide range of products, from the iconic whistle kettle to the designer fly swatter.
The company founded a dynasty not only with products for the general public - including service trays and cutlery for everyday use - but also by creating some of the most famous cult objects of our time.
