What makes this coffee a Grand Cru?

  • - A cup with a very expressive aroma evoking apple, redcurrant and elderflower
  • - Agroforestry cultivation under the shade of indigenous tree species allowing the cherries to ripen more slowly and thus offering a sweeter cup
  • - A traceability that is rare in Ethiopia, with the possibility of tracing the cherries back to the plot, made possible by a passionate farmer who processes his cherries on his own farm

The farm:

This forest coffee is produced by Nazimu Abamecha, in the Jimma appellation. Nazimu inherited his farm from his family, he cultivates on 8 ha a quality coffee, within a rich natural environment made of indigenous tree species.  Nazimu has a great experience in the coffee business as he worked for 8 years in the Duromina cooperative, which he created. Recently he has chosen to work more independently to improve the traceability of his coffee and to provide high quality micro-lots.

Nazimu's farm is located south of Jimma, in the Goma district, in the village of Botto. Nazimu's parents used to work this land before him and they also produced coffee on it. The farm covers 8 ha and is immersed in a beautiful coffee forest of indigenous species. This complex agroforestry system ensures the production of high quality coffee, where the cherries ripen slowly in the shade of the dense tree cover. Nazimu is committed to maintaining this ancient farming system here by maintaining the forest, and he also owns a few animals that help him work his maize fields, a crop that helps supplement his income. Nazimu manages his coffee trees with great care, dividing them into different lots on his farm according to their age. His oldest plants here are 32 years old, the newest 4 years old. Nazimu and Belco started working together this year, pooling our energies to select and trace the most beautiful lots on this coffee farm in Botto.

The farmer:

Nazimu Abamecha is a child of Botto, a village where his family has been producing coffee for several generations. He inherited the farm from his father and hopes that one day one of his children will take up the work of the land like him. Nazimu, an energetic man in his forties, is concerned with making the most of Jimma's coffee. Ten years ago, he created the Duromina cooperative to ensure better recognition of the region's coffee production. He was the manager of this cooperative for 8 years, which shows his knowledge of the product, of marketing and his dedication to this work. However, aware that the value of the product depends above all on greater traceability, he decided two years ago to sell his coffee independently, to ensure a higher quality of his batches. It was then that the links with Belco emerged and we are happy to start this new road with him.
