Purchase guide : Which juicer to choose?

Buying your citrus juicer is not something trivial, we advise you on the different types of devices that coexist and help you make the choice that best meets your expectations to make your breakfast rhyme with juice of fresh fruit. Freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juice, anyone?

What is a Citrus Juicer?

A citrus press is part of the juice extractor family, but it is easier to use than its two counterparts, the juice extractor and the juicer. Colloquially known as the lemon squeezer, this tool that has become common among households owes its name to the use in the 18th century of a product similar to a potato masher and which was actually used as a lemon squeezer.

A juice is obtained from any fruit that comes into contact with the cone, which rotates on itself to extract as much juice as possible while limiting losses. It is poured into your glass using a spout present on all lemon squeezers.

There are different types of lemon squeezers, which one should I choose?

Manual juicers

We all know the manual lemon squeezer, it is one of the most common. We deposit half of a fruit which, on the operating system mentioned above, delivers the juice in an optimal way.

The advantage would be that it is very convenient for users. There is no need to look at the manual very long to take it in hand. In addition, its size is minimal since it can be taken on vacation for camping or taken out for occasional needs thanks to its small size.

It is also inexpensive and very easy to clean. We all know that these are significant elements. Its weak points are mainly that the time required to make a juice is longer or that the juice obtained can sometimes be poorly filtered and seeds or pulp can be detected in it at certain times. Finally, the options are almost non-existent on this type of model.

Electric juicers

Another possibility is the automatic juicer. It has the advantage of saving time on the preparation of the juice unlike the operation of the manual lemon squeezer. It also works by a cone system, but the juice extraction is done in an automated way.

It is usually equipped with different cones, something you do not find on the basic model. The usefulness is that you can obtain a juice with or without pulp thanks to different materials or dimensions from one to another.

Also, you have the possibility to rotate the juicer in one direction then in the opposite direction to increase the yield while leaving the same lemon, grapefruit or other. Finally, the automatic stop or start is possible, this means that by placing the fruit on the cone, it automatically launches the juice extractor.

You will also find lemon squeezers that work with a lever system.

Here is how it works: A handle acting as a lever will make sure to bring the citrus fruit and the cone closer together. It is when the pressure occurs by the movement of the lever that the juice comes out. If you have ever used a garlic press, it is basically the same principle!

It can have an aesthetic side and is very effective when it comes to delivering juice evenly. Nevertheless, the grip of certain devices with lever, remain difficult at times, as well as the cleaning of the juicer since the lever is integral with the device.

Silent juicer

Aside from manual juicers, a juicer isn't known to be the loudest appliance out there, but it can still make noise. It is therefore an element to consider if for you it is going to be used very often, especially an automatic orange press.

Keep in mind that an everyday device emits between 30 and 90 decibels. Less than or equal to 20, you have almost no perception of noise. Conversely, as soon as you reach 40 decibels, your device can then sound like a refrigerator noise so don't go beyond that.

Design citrus press, stainless steel citrus press, vintage citrus press: What to choose ?

We are not going to hide our pleasure if the product is more aesthetic. I am thinking, among other things, of the Juicy Salif juicers which will fit perfectly as a design object in your kitchen. The material also plays on the appearance of your citrus press, Morphy Richards offers stainless steel citrus presses for more hygiene and durability of the product.

How to clean your citrus press?

The Smeg range of citrus juicers is designed to limit the consumer's cleaning time. The brand has thought of the anti-drip system so that you no longer have to start your day with half the squeezed orange juice next to the glass.

Cleaning also involves cleaning the elements. Easy to clean, the elements can also be removable for hand washing, or even go in the dishwasher, as is the case with the yellow VITA product from Casa Bugatti. Very often, we even find ourselves not having to iron a shot of water on the removable parts, because the manufacturers have thought of equipping it with a protective cover against dust, for example.
