Production Characteristics:
Widely regarded as the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia is home exclusively to Arabica coffee. The country's coffee trees thrive at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,300 metres, where the high-altitude growing conditions encourage the development of complex aromas and exceptional cup quality.
Ethiopian coffees are traditionally known as Moka coffees, a name that originates from the historic Yemeni port of Mocha, through which coffee was once traded. Today, Ethiopia produces a wide variety of distinctive Moka coffees, each reflecting the characteristics of its region.
Coffee plays a vital role in Ethiopia's economy. Around 400,000 hectares are dedicated to coffee cultivation, making the country one of the world's leading producers and exporters. Approximately 60% of the annual harvest is exported, supporting the livelihoods of millions of people.
Coffee is grown using several cultivation methods across the country. Some plants flourish under the natural canopy of Ethiopia's forests, while others are cultivated in semi-forest environments, alongside food crops, or on larger commercial farms.
The majority of Ethiopian coffee is processed using the natural (dry) method, which enhances fruit-forward flavours and sweetness. Around one-fifth of production is washed (wet processed), resulting in cleaner, brighter cup profiles.
